History

Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology (DBB) was founded in 2013 from her two predecessors Graduate Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (established in 1993) and Department of Life Sciences (established in 2005). DBB offers bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees. Undergraduate students will study courses of disciplines covering modern biology and chemistry, and, at the same time, conduct laboratory courses of biochemistry, molecular biology, organic chemistry, and analytic chemistry.

The graduate program advised the elite undergraduate students to explore further in multiple disciplines of biomedical and biotechnological science at molecular, cellular, physiological, and evolutionary levels by taking a group of well-designed advanced courses, including lecture and laboratory training according to their own interests.

DBB requires students to actively engage in research by conducting independent research projects at a laboratory of their choice. Students are also required to join training seminars to harness themselves with their ability to locate themselves in the frontier of the state-of-art biotechnology and bioscience.

Major research laboratory groups of DBB dedicated to the discovery of mystery of life and breakthrough of biotechnology are outlined below.

Evolutionary developmental Biology: This group is focused on hypoxia, gene regulation, signal transduction, carcinogenesis, animal embryonic developments, transgenic fish model systems, and reproductive physiology. Research findings have been published in esteemed journals such as Cell Death and Development, Development Dynamics, and Molecular Carcinogenesis.

Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology: This group is concentrated on the research on gene editing and therapy, immune therapy, stem cell culturing, cancer, neuron-degeneration, metabolic diseases and inflammation. Research findings have been published in prestigious journals such as Transgenic Research.

Biomedical Nanotechnology: This group is centered on DNA-repair mechanisms, biological anti-oxidation systems, environmental analytical chemistry, nano-biotechnology, and biomedical materials. Research findings have been published in distinguished journals such as Biosensors and BioelectronicsJournal of Nanomaterials, NanoscaleACS NanoPharmaceutics Aquatic ToxiciologyToxicology and Applied pharmacology and Free Radical Biology and Medicine.

Natural Compound of Algae and other sea creatures. This group is concentrated on purifying natural compound from algae and sea creatures and uncover the molecular mechanism of the biological function in human health and disease. Research findings have been published in distinguished journals such as Marine DrugsScientific Reports, and Oncotarget.

Proteomics: This group is concentrated on employing Mass Spectroscopy and analytic chemistry to delineate the cellular processes during cancer development and cardiovascular disease progression. Research findings have been published in reputable journals such as CellNature and Science.

Bioinformatics: This group is concentrated on tapping into CPU and GPU to uncover the mechanism of allosteric effect of proteins by conducting computer simulation of hybrid QM/MM (quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics) approach and discover the genetic makeup of human creativity by analyzing the data of genome and transcriptome from next-generation sequencing. Research findings have been published in reputable journals such as the Briefing in BioinformaticsBMS genomicsPlos One, and FEBS Journal and Jounal of Computational Biology.

DBB graduate students have applied their multi-disciplinary learning and research abilities in the Center of Excellence for the Oceans (CMBB) and the Molecular Integrative Biology (MIB) program jointly operated by NTOU and Institute of Cellular and Organismic Biology at Academia Sinica in Taiwan. By participating in project-oriented and hypothesis-driven experiments, students can hone their unique abilities and prepare themselves to become leaders in the bio-industry or academia.

DBB has been awarded a research excellence fund by the Center of Excellence for the Oceans for 6 years and has been actively conducting a study on environmental adaptation under the umbrella of global environmental change. DBB will continue to provide crucial contributions to solve contemporary challenges by conducting biomedical research and developing biotechnology.
